Update: Sisterlocks at 5 Years & 6 Months
9:30 AMGosh I haven't post about my hair for a while. My Sisterlocks has gotten much longer, and there are times when I have to admit there are too much in the summer (can we say hot), and there are times where they scared the crap out of me due to random loose locks on the shoulder etc. Beside those two random issues, I still love my Sisterlocks journey, and whenever I think about going back to being natural, I plant my fingers in my daughter hair, and with a loud resounding NOPE, I come back to earth.
Below are my updates, and I decided to do this post as an FAQ format, which should answer most of your questions I know you may have.
Length Check - Are You Happy Now?
I'm actually really happy with this length, and I found that the longer my Sisterlocks gets, the harder it is to deal with. Curling and doing braid-out are taking much longer, and now require super damp hair in order to take. Just dealing with those issues alone makes me lazy. Once my locks reach mid-back length, I will be trimming them. I will share that milestone when I reach it.
Styling - Why Not Do More?
I'm not happy with the length of my middle yet, and I'm still waiting for that area to grow in before I really start doing things like the "petal style", and the really neat twists etc. Right now my styles tend to be quick and easy, and hide my problem area really easily. My go-to style for the most part is Messy Bun, Messy Up-do, Braid-Out, and Curls achieved in multiply ways.
Color - Why Jet Black?
I have colored my Sisterlocks in different colors (requiring bleaching/lifting) in the past, and I have seen the damage it had caused, because of that damage, I have chosen not to do it anymore. Now they are ways to maintain colored Sisterlocks, but I just don't want to deal with the additional maintenance of it, since I'm already dealing with monthly maintenance.
By the way, I'm due for a color refresh, and I plan on doing it in March (if I can). I use to look forward to coloring my Sisterlocks, but now I have come to truly dread it. It all due to the fact that my Sisterlocks are much longer, which has increase the cost of Naturtint, which basically means I need to get more boxes. I also dislike the dying process and the retighten session which result in longer time in the chair. So yeah, dying my Sisterlocks at this length is a pain in the rear. Note: Amazon is still my choice of buying this hair dye, because I found them to be so much cheaper.
Maintenance - Any Change?
Nothing has really change, I don't need my moisturizing sprays as much, and that can be due to the fact I'm using conditioners now. During cooler temp, I sometime like to rub a light oil like my Moroccanoil Treatment Oil or Jojoba though my Sisterlocks, just because they seem to be dry and rough to touch.
I'm also gotten past the stage where I have to worry about slippage etc. I release a more in-debt post about my maintenance here if you still curious.
Thinning Update - Any Progress?
My sides are about as thick as they going to get, and my middle grid has been completely restored. So far my hair thinning issues has not returned, and I hope it continues to stay that way. The only thing I did notice is that one area is just super slow with growth, and is not filling in as fast as I like, and that has me super frustrated. You can read about my thinning issues here, if you were not a follower prior.
Hopefully in a couple of years from now, as I trim my Sisterlocks, the middle will play catch up and my Sisterlocks will start being even.
Once again, thanks for reading, and I hope I answered all your questions, and satisfied your curiosity about my hair. I use certain term on this post, so if you are not used to it, please read about Sisterlocks here, and the terms here.

Your sisterlocks look really healthy! I don't do much styling either don't really have the time for it. I've been using Shea Moisture products for cleansing and Carols Daughter Monoi oil collection for moisturizing.
ReplyDeleteWOW THAT'S A LONG TIME. VERY NICE. I AM LOOKING FOR ANY PRODUCT THAT CAN CURL MY HAIR.. IT IS NATURAL. NEW POST ON http://melodyjacob1.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteYour hair looks super pretty and healthy! I'm not a fan of dying hair either.

Your hair looks so great, healthy and thick!!! Maybe you are favored by nature, but I see you have to do a lot for maintenance. How long does it take to dry them after washing?

If I dry them with a blow dryer, it takes about 1 1/2. If I air dry, it takes about 4 hours (indoors).
DeleteAs for maintenance...honestly I mostly wash and go for the most part. If I didn't color as much with the jet black and rinse, I wouldn't need to do treatments or apply things to increase moisture -_-.
Looks so Beautiful! :)
ReplyDeleteIf I weren't so lazy I would grow mine out ... or as I prefer to say low maintenance ... okay lazy! o_O
Have a Great One Sis! :)
Great update! I can understand why dying is a pain-that stuff is expense! But, it's good to know about that product! I like the ingredients. Congrats on your anniversary. Your locks definitely look loved and cared for. I'm sure those sparse areas will be a distant memory soon. Oh, and long locks arent all they are cracked up to be are they? They are WORK! I think your length is my goal. I promised my consultant I'd do brastrap, then cut it bak to APL. That's enough-as I think about it, maybe too much, hmm...#lockon (I appreciate the hair update!)
ReplyDeleteYour hair looks beautiful. I always love when my hair grows and it healthy. It just makes me so excited.

hahaha. Love the comment about pointing to your daughters hair with a "nope". Going natural is no joke, but like you I couldn't go back either. Although, there are days where I wish I could swing my hair with out getting a cramp in my neck. Oh well. Your locks look lovely and at least you're still in love with them!

Kreoyla I really appreciate this post you are always so helpful and sharing. I was wondering what most "healthy" lock wearers colored their hair with. I see Nutrient in whole foods an often wonder if its really healthy. I've been itching for a little color but I've only been locking for 10 months, and I'm afraid that I won't be able to moisturize like I need to to offset dryness. I've done a semi perm a couple times but it really doesn't last long. And of course it's dark. I want it a little lighter.
ReplyDeleteI have been using Naturtint for years with no issue. My hair doesn't break from it, and it truly gentle on my locks.
DeleteHi kreyola, Ive been watching your locks for a long time now. My locks are just getting past my ears and I Love them. I was wondering have you ever thought about using Henna and Indigo to get jat black hair. It adds moisture to your hair, it is non-damaging and it doesn't dry your hair out. It is a little messy to apply but if your using a stylist, she would have the proper equipment to contain the mess.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I didn't go the route of Henna is because of the messiness of it. I also didn't like the fact that it kind of powdery, and just didn't want to deal with the "what ifs. My consultant who does my coloring, never really offered any other options but using hair dye (the brand is your choice of course).
DeleteThanks for replying so soon. I also wanted to say that your sisterlocks are some of the most beautiful locks I have seen. Whatever you do it is working for you. Love the makeup too. I haven't got the nerves yet to post my loc pictures but when I do you will be one of the first to see them.
ReplyDeletefor your sisterlocks did you get them done professionally? or do them yourself? I am thinking of taking the plunge but the price tag is holding me back
