Review: Jamaican Black Castor Oil VS. Castor Oil (Cold Pressed)

1:29 PM

I have used both Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor and Regular 100% Castor Oil (Cold Pressed). The Jamican Black Castor oil is much darker and much thicker then the regular version. The Regular "100%" Castor Oil is natural and has to be cold pressed in order to get the natural pale yellowish color.

Now here is an interesting fact about Jamican Black Castor Oil, it is not a completely "natural" product. In order to get that rich dark color, they add ash from roasted castor beans into the oil. So in truth, the dark color is achieved through ashes, and not because of being less processed vs the regular Castor Oil. Is there a benefit to the ash? Sunny Isle believes there is. In the end, it is up to you to decide.  Below are my reviews of both version of Castor Oil.

Claims
100% Castor Oil (Cold Pressed & Cold Processed) is a cold pressed and cold processed, pure, natural emollient oil that softens and nourishes the skin. Castor Oil is ideal for use in castor oil packs and is excellent for massage into joints and muscles. Castor Oil is a natural emollient that penetrates the surface layers of the skin making it softer and more pliable.

Claims
Jamican Black Castor Oil   has an age old reputation as an all purpose healing oil. It's commonly used for hair and scalp problems, skin conditions, aches and pain, laxative, breast massage, fibroid, first aid, for cuts and wounds, burns and much more.

Below is references about the ashes.
Organic seeds are roasted and ground by a manual Grinder and then the crushed beans are boiled to extract the 100% pure, dark brown, organic oil. It's the best quality oil on the market. Why you may ask? Compared to other brands it is the darkest Jamaican Black Castor Oil because we roast our beans longer which produces more Ash Content in our oil than any other oil on the market. More ash content increases the effectiveness of the oil. Therefore the Sunny Isle brand will strengthen and increase the length of your hair faster than any other brands on the market today.

Conclusion
I have used both version, and I can't tell the different as far as hair growth and uses, because they both do what I need it to do, and that is to soften my locks or to stimulate hair growth. Now the reason why I switch over to the regular cold pressed version was due to the smell of Jamaican Black Castor. You guys know how I'm about smells, and I had an issue with the smell of JBCO, which is smoky. I can't stand the smell of smoke, unless I'm at a BBQ, but my belly is about to be filled, so that doesn't count ^_-. I know they have scented ones now, but since I have tried the Regular Castor Oil, and find it to be just as good, plus it is odorless, I see no reason to change.

So do I recommend these products? Yes I do, but I would recommend the regular version over the JBCO, because it is not only cheaper, but also has no scent.

Please note that not all castor oils are made with the same method. Some use chemical solvents which makes it easier to extract. The clear ones are the result of filtering, which removes the iodine content, which remove the pale yellowish color. I would stay clear of those versions, if you want a completely natural product.

  1. So you use the castor oil on your locks? I've only used the JBCO on my scalp the smell kinda smoky but I sniffed one of the scented versions and it smelled even worse lol

    1. I used the castor oil in my hot oil treatment, and wash it out afterward with a mild shampoo. I use to use the sisterlocks moisture treatment as a hot oil treatment, but it would dry fast and become very grainy on the hair.

FYI...I still use the Castor Oil on my scalp....just not the JBCO. I glad you shared you experience with the scented version lol.

    1. I was referring to the process of making the product, not the actual ash itself. Thanks for the comment.

  3. This is the second article that I have read on the topic and it appears that organic castor oil is the way to go for me. I am currently using black castor oil. I like it but I'd rather have the more natural cold pressed product.

    1. The reason for my switch was due to the smell of it, if you do switch, I would love for you to share your experience with it at a later date. So far I have no issue with the switch :D.

  4. Hello. In your article (above) you indicated (about the JBCO): "the dark color is achieved through ashes" however your picture looks a greenish color (sort of like Olive Oil). I just received some today and mine is the exact color as your picture. It has a very unique scent. Can you tell me why it's not 'actually' brown (either what I've received or your picture? Does it come in different colors even though the ash may be added to it?

    1. Hmmmm...The JBCO I got was a light brown color and the current castor oil that I use is a pale yellow for sure with no scent (and I have a very sensitive nose). If you got JBCO, I know they have other scent and the color may be different. I also know they are different brands of castor oil that gets ashes added to it as well. So unless I know the name of the one you got, I won't be able to tell you anything.

As for the coloring on the picture, maybe it your monitor, but it has more of a yellow tint than a green tint.

  6. I have light cold pressed castor oil and was wondering if I'd see more benefits from the black, but after reading this and another blog it seems that I'm just as well off. I guess I'll save a few dollars and keep using what I have.
