How To: Get Super Straight Sisterlocks on Magnetic Rollers
3:51 PMBelow is a tutorial on "how to" get super straight and extra length sisterlocks. You can achieve the same look with less the time with flat iron (got to be honest here) but a lot of the "natural" hair community have a problem with ANY heat being applied to their hair or locks, so this "how to" is for you. You can also check out the video by CurlyNuGrowth as well for a tutorial on this.
STEP 1 - You well need Magnetic Rollers, Hair Bands
(Optional), Spray Bottle (filled with water), and the Double Prong Metal Clips
Step 2 - Split your sisterlocks into a Mohawk, and put the rest of your locks into twin pony tails.
Non Step - I had issue with thinning, so a couple of my locks are shorter than the rest, and that is why I split them below. You should take that area with one roller going all the way back (read a recent post about my thinning issue here).
Step 3 - You want to roll your locks in the direction of how you want your locks to finally settle and look, and than use the clips. For me I did it backward (layer look) vs forward (flip look) to see the result click here. An example of a flip look is here. Note: You want one of the clip to secure your rollers down, so make sure they are clipped at the base/root of your locks, and then use the others to secure any flyaway etc.
Step 5 - Check for any locks that must have slip or rollers that need to be redone. Once you are completely done, do a final spray with your water bottle and relax. If you not dead set again using heat, try using your hair dryer to speed up the drying time.
Final Look - To be honest, I was so over applying these rollers by the time I got to the right side that I almost give up. I really hope my speed improve in the future, because this took too long to apply and air dry, and I honestly prefer using my flat iron -_-.

Yay! Excited to see someone using magnetic rollers on sisterlocks!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait until my hair is long enough for me to rollerset with my magnetic rollers (I have the larger purple and gray ones from my "long-hair-relaxed-days... too cheap to supplement with smaller ones), ha ha.
Funny, when I had relaxed hair, I never rollersetted with them to achieve a straight look... I always just loved it for the bouncy curls-- But I wasn't/am not sure exactly what the outcome would be. I saw your results page and your hair came out great! Had the soft "wrapped" look for sure. :)
Mastering the rollerset takes a few tries, for sure! Here are a few tips I learned back in my heyday:
* Right roller size for your length matters... Smaller = more curlier; Too Big = less bounce.
* Amount of hair on the roller also matters... Too much hair = limper look/longer to dry. Too little hair = drive yourself crazy trying to sit with a million rollers under the dryer :)
* Placing the clips (just 2 per roller) at the base of the roller helps to secure it better. Once you get the first roller secured, if you roll in a line and tight enough, you can secure the next roller to the previous one. (I posted some rollerset pics here: http://hairgrease.wordpress.com/2008/12/31/2008-in-review-the-curls-were-popping/)
These are tips I used when I relaxed hair so I'm not sure how well they will translate to sisterlocks.
Hope you give them a try again and post more pics! :)
Thanks so much for the additional info! I'm sure when I keep doing this, my speed can only improve. I think unloack hair is a little bit easier to grip and roll than sisterlocks, but I think your tips will still help with my speed.
