Sisterlocks & Washing Every Week, Is That Possible?
7:03 PMI rarely wash my hair every week, and if I do, it is because I had a super icky week, meaning I sweated like crazy at the GYM and went to the beach etc. If I washed my hair that week, I DO NOT use my Aura Rosemary Mint Shampoo, since I consider that shampoo as a clarify shampoo, hence it stripe out everything.
Prior to having sisterlocks, I wore my hair natural and I did not use a clarify shampoo at all, since my hair was very tightly curl, and I needed to retain whatever moisture that I could. The shampoo that I used was "Miss Jessie's Crème De La Curl Cleansing Crème - 12 ozShampoos)" made by Miss Jessie, which doesn't have sulfate, and was very mild as far as shampoos goes. Also note that this shampoo is not sudsy at all! That the shampoo I use when I want a very mild washing.
So if you feel that you must wash your hair every week, then you MUST use a mild shampoo for those wash, and then do clarify wash when you going for retighten/interlocking session. It not the end of the world if you use clarifying shampoo only, but you will notice your locks will be SUPER dry, and you will need to use a lot of moisturizing product to bring back your moisture.
Final Note: If you locks are not dirty, don't wash them. Every two week washing for locks are fine, and our hair is not prone to oil build up that it require weekly washing like our European counterparts. So relax and don't worry about the status quo for washing hair/locks. Please be aware that this is for mature locks only, if you do decide to wash your sisterlocks every week as a newbie, you WILL have to bundle & band your locks each time to avoid unraveling.

Hey Kreyola, thanks for the very enlightening post...Also I love your hair, its really nice and full.....I am a newbie i.e about 2-3 months old. My hair is seriously brittle, breaking and splitting at the loose ends which haven't budded yet(when i hold up a strand, I can see the splits from the middle not even at the end). Some posts have attributed that to build up of minerals from hard water. What product can i use to bring the moisture back into my hair if i decide to clarify? And how do i clarify? As a starter can i use the aura rosemary mint shampoo?(i don't have easy access to the SL starter shampoo as i live in the UK) At the moment i use the Malki Dead Sea Shampoo which is marketed as leaving no buildup and only containing olive, coconut and palm oil and calcium and magnesium. Do you think this is ok? Thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment! Since you a newbie I really doubt you have built up, but if you do, then you can use the Aura Rosemary Mint Shampoo to clarify. FYI You can use any shampoo that is marketed as a clarify shampoo; even Suave makes one for a $1. Once you have clarify, you do need to bring the moisture back in, since you are new, I don't recommend using the conditioner, but you can use coconut oil mix with water and spray your locks everyday day or when you feel your sisterlocks are dry.
ReplyDeleteOnce your sisterlocks has settled, adding conditioner and a moisturizing spray (if you look under my product tab you can see one example) to your routine will eliminate your seriously brittle, breaking and splitting loose ends. Also from what I have read about Malki Dead Sea Shampoo, it is a very mild shampoo, which is why you may still have build up, if build up is indeed the case, because when you use a clarify shampoo, your hair feel like EVERYTHING has been stripe out.
Most consultants recommend not adding additional product on your hair for a reason, and If all else fail, ask your consultant. She will have a better idea since she is able to see your hair, and base on her judgments, she can tell you what to do.
During the first 6 months of my SL journey I washed my hair every 3-4 days because of my scalp condition. Since then i've washed my locs once a week, but I don't encounter buildup unless I work out excessively. Then i'll use a clarifying shampoo to remove it, but it can be drying so I avoid doing this too often. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDelete@dewdrop...This was trial and error for me. I mostly wash my sisterlocks every two weeks, and I notice every time I use my main shampoo, it would stripe out everything! So when I decided to wash my hair a particular yucky week, I found that my mild shampoo did the job without striping out everything. So now I use my clarify shampoo when I going in for a retighten session and that seems to work out the best.
